The causative structures: have/get something done
We use causative structures when we want to talk about something that someone else did for us or for another person.
The form is:
Have something done is used to say that we arrange someone else to do something for us.
- She had her car fixed. (I asked someone to fix it for me.)
- Jill had the roof repaired. (She arranged for somebody else to repair it.)
The causative structure get something done is used in informal spoken English:
- When is he going to get the car fixed?
- I think you should get your hair cut.
Sometimes we use have something done to say that something happens to somebody or their belongings:
- John had his leg broken in a fight.
- Have she ever had her handbag stolen?
